Software 2000 Announces Collaboration with Hewlett-Packard on LaserJet
1100/1100A Project
OXFORD — October 12, 1998 — Software 2000 today announced
that it was chosen by Hewlett-Packard to provide the PCL 5e print
driver technology for the Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 1100 multi-function
printer.
The PCL 5e device drivers are Windows 3.x/95/98 and Windows NT
4 compatible and were developed by Device Guys (Redmond, WA), for
HP using Software 2000's "Component Driver Architecture" (CDA)
Device Driver Kits (CDA DDK). Drivers created using the Software
2000 Driver Development Kit are "World Ready" and support
Pan European, Far Eastern, Middle Eastern, USA and other variants
of Windows 3.x/95/98 and Windows NT 4.
Software 2000's PCL 5e drivers incorporate driver-based printer
job finishing features including n-up printing, booklet printing,
scale to page, watermarks, manual duplex and more.
Chris Mesa, [Hewlett-Packard] commented that "Software 2000's
CDA was chosen in part because of the speed at which very robust
drivers can be developed, and the rich set of driver-based functionality
that can be used to simulate features usually only found in expensive
high end printers."
CDA is a modular driver development technology which significantly
accelerates the development of printer drivers and de-skills the
work involved. A CDA driver is developed using a scripting or description
language. The same CDA driver descriptions created on one operating
system platform may also be used to create a driver for the other.
CDA driver cores exist for color raster, PCL 5e, PCL 5c, PCL XL PostScript
Level 2 and PostScript 3 on Windows 3.x/95/98 and Windows NT 4.
Since its launch in 1996, numerous major printer OEMs have leveraged
CDA driver technologies. Manufacturers including Canon, OCE, Hewlett-Packard,
Ricoh, Samsung, Xerox have chosen CDA to satisfy some or all of their
driver needs. Nigel Hearne, President of Software 2000's US operation
stated "we are very excited that HP chose Software 2000 as its
driver technology vendor, we have had a long-standing relationship
with HP and the DJ 1100 project further validates CDA."
