Software 2000 Acquires Mac Printer Driver Technology from COMPUTER:applications
Inc.
OXFORD — January 15, 1999 — Software 2000 Limited,
Oxford announced today that it has acquired the business of COMPUTER:applications,
Inc. Raleigh, North Carolina.
COMPUTER:applications, Inc. [CAI] was primarily involved in the
development of QuickDraw and PostScript printer drivers and related
technologies for the Macintosh, Power Mac and iMac computers. By
comparison, Software 2000 develops PCL5e, PCL5c, PCL XL, PostScript
and colour raster printer drivers for Windows 3.x/95/98/NT and Windows
2000 on PC based platforms. Software 2000 was attracted to CAI because
of the complementary nature of both businesses.
CAI's products include MacJET, MacJET USB, OnPAGE and OnPAGE USB.
MacJET: is a Macintosh QuickDraw print driver technology with a
similar architecture to Software 2000's own PrintMagic colour raster
PC driver product. PrintMagic is used by EPSON, Hewlett Packard,
Lexmark, Olivetti and many other Original Equipment Manufacturers
(OEMs) around the world. CAI has used MacJET to deliver PCL5, PCL5e,
monochrome and colour printer driver solutions to OEMs for Macintosh
computers.
OnPAGE: is an Apple LaserWriter 8 compatible PostScript printer
driver and utility technology (similar to Software 2000's own CDA
PostScript drivers for the PC platform) that is fully PPD driven.
OnPAGE and MacJET support the full line of Macintosh computers
including the iMac (supported by the MacJET USB and OnPAGE USB products).
CAI products are also used by various major OEMs around the world
including Epson, IBM, Kyocera and Xerox.
"We are very excited by this opportunity", commented
Tony Harris, Technical Director of Software 2000. "Apple's success
with the iMac has stimulated the Mac market and led many of our OEM
customers to request Macintosh equivalents of Software 2000's own
driver products. This technology acquisition positions us to take
full advantage of this promising new opportunity."
