Software 2000 announces availability of Sorcerer
OXFORD — February 15, 2002 — Software 2000 today announced
the immediate availability of their revolutionary Sorcerer Driver
Development Kit (DDK). Based upon the concept of a Single Source
Development Environment (SSDE), Sorcerer provides a unique method
of printer driver creation that remains independent of target Operating
Systems (OS). This innovative and ground-breaking technology removes
the duplication of effort currently involved in producing printer
drivers for multiple operating systems by employing a single object
oriented driver description to target multiple platforms.
High quality, consistent colour is guaranteed on even the most
sophisticated multi-intensity or photo-inkjet printers with the inclusion
of AutoEZ-Cal™, a Wizard based automated calibration/characterisation
system. AutoEZ-Cal dramatically reduces the time required for media
and ink calibrations, a process that can take weeks or months using
conventional techniques. With AutoEZ-Cal™, new media and ink
combinations are calibrated just once and then are automatically
enabled for all supported operating systems.
"We've spent multiple man years completely automating
the driver development and calibration processes." said Tony
Harris, Chief Technology Officer. "The result is a toolkit
that allows our customers to do in days or weeks what previously
took months or years. The Sorcerer development environment gives
our OEMs ‘time to market' advantages and significant
cost savings".
In support of the release of the Sorcerer toolkit, Software 2000
has also announced a family of specific printer driver creation modules
that can be purchased separately and used to generate output data
for the following OS platforms:
- Microsoft Windows 95, 98, Me
- Microsoft Windows NT4, 2000, XP
- Apple Macintosh OS 9.x (OS X under
development)
- Linux 2.2.x & 2.4.x (Intel distributions)
Once the core driver has been defined within the Sorcerer application,
the developer may use any combination of the available modules to
rapidly create drivers for that OS. If another driver is required
at a later date for a different OS all that is needed is the relevant
module.
For the first time, office equipment vendors creating printer drivers
for their devices may focus their development teams on providing
and supporting key market differentiators; free from the worry of
managing multiple development threads traditionally required for
multiple OS support. Lower development costs, higher quality, consistent
driver branding, reduced QA requirements and faster time to market
are direct business benefits that are realised when using the Sorcerer
environment.
