Software Imaging Announces Strategic Adoption of New
AMD and Intel Processor Platforms
Helping OEMs Be First to Market with 64 Bit Printing
OXFORD — August 20, 2004 — Software Imaging announced
today that it would incorporate support for the AMD Opteron/Athlon
64 and Intel Xeon (Nocona) processors in its Printer Driver Developer
Toolkits and device driver technologies.
Microsoft has recently announced plans to deliver Windows XP 64-bit
edition for desktop computers and Windows Server 2003 64-bit edition
for network servers. These operating systems are currently expected
to ship in the first half of 2005.
The AMD Opteron/Athlon 64 and Intel Xeon (Nocona) processors provide
64-bit support for desktop and server applications. Software Imaging
will support this new generation of processors in conjunction with
the new Windows 64-bit operating systems that Microsoft has announced.
In addition, Software Imaging is evaluating support for the new 64-bit
Linux distributions such as Novell’s SuSE 9.1, and the forthcoming
Apple OS X 64-bit “Tiger” operating system.
64-bit computing is predicted to lead to a new wave of innovation
in the technology industry. With advance support from Software Imaging,
OEMs will be able to harness this innovation through:
- Use of toolkits with which OEMs are already familiar
- Use of existing device driver source code
- Being first to market with support in their products, for the
new operating systems.
“Our OEM customers know that they can rely on Software Imaging
to help them take full advantage of the latest operating systems,” said
Tony Harris, Technical Director of Software Imaging, commenting on
the strategy. “Our customers had the market advantage of being
at least 18 months ahead of their competition with the original introduction
of Windows 2000. They will benefit from the same advantage with early
readiness to support these latest 64-bit Windows Operating Systems”.
Software Imaging’s printer driver development platforms include
the Component Driver Architecture (CDA) range of toolkits and the
multiplatform development environment, Sorcerer. Full details can
