Software Imaging Delivers Microsoft Metro Filters
New Metro Filter Pipeline Leverages the Print Power of Longhorn
OXFORD - June 13, 2005 - Software Imaging announces the results
of their recent work on the new Metro filter pipeline being developed
with Microsoft for their next version of Microsoft Windows codenamed "Longhorn".
The work demonstrates the power that will be available to printer
driver developers within the new print system that will release with
the Longhorn version of Windows, currently scheduled for release
at the end of 2006. A summary of the work was presented by Mike Woods,
Chief Scientist at Software Imaging, during the recent Microsoft
WinHEC and Driver DevCon conferences held in Seattle.

Software Imaging has worked closely with Microsoft on their Windows
printing technology since concluding an agreement between the two
companies in November 2003. This filter pipeline development will
enable Microsoft to deliver sample code within their MetroDrv driver
development environment that demonstrates the power of the Metro
filter pipeline. “We are particularly pleased with
the flexibility that the Metro filter pipeline offers printer OEMs and developers.” said
Tony Harris, CTO and Founder of Software Imaging, “The close working
relationship that we have developed over the past few years with Microsoft will
enable them to deliver an extremely powerful suite of filters.”
In addition to this core development work for Microsoft, Software
Imaging has confirmed that their existing printer driver technologies,
CDA and Sorcerer Driver Development Kits (DDKs), are now fully compatible
with many of the improvements and innovations that Microsoft will
be making for Longhorn. Printer driver developers using Software
Imaging’s DDKs are able to create and distribute drivers
that work with current and legacy versions of Microsoft Windows and this announcement
is particularly welcome for OEMs who want to ensure that their printer driver
development environment will be able to take advantage of the advances announced
by Microsoft.
With enhanced functions such as document control, extended color spaces and improved
graphics fidelity; the Metro print path and Metro document format fully support
the WinFX graphics model, offering OEM print developers the opportunity to take
advantage of the advanced graphics capabilities that have emerged within the
PC and peripherals market in recent years.
Update: As of July 22nd 2005, Microsoft have announced
that the official name for Longhorn will be Windows Vista. In addition, the official name for Metro will be XPS.
