Software Imaging Announces Immediate Availability
of Intel-based Mac OS X Printer Drivers
Software Imaging's Sorcerer Adds Support for Apple's Universal
Binary-based Print Drivers
Oxford, United Kingdom -
July 24, 2006 - Software Imaging is pleased to announce the latest
release of Sorcerer, a Driver Development Toolkit which enables fast
print driver creation for multiple operating systems. This latest
release extends the broad-base of supported operating systems and
platforms to include Apple's new Intel-based Mac OS X platforms,
allowing OEMs to simply rebuild their existing driver source with
Sorcerer for instant Intel Core Duo or Solo support.
Apple's new Intel-based OS X first appeared in the market
earlier this year and it is expected that the entire Mac family will
be converted to Intel processors by the end of 2006. "Universal
Binary" applications running on these new Intel processors
will require Intel-based Mac OS X printer drivers. This update ensures
that printer OEMs can easily use Sorcerer to offer continued support
of the Mac platform.
Software Imaging has a track record for providing early support
for new operating systems well before their release, the most recent
example being Microsoft Windows XP x64. This latest release of Sorcerer
extends its capabilities beyond Macintosh OS 9 and OS X for PowerPC,
to include both Intel Core Duo and Solo processors. This allows printer
OEMs to quickly respond to Apple's recent switch to Intel processors
while continuing to support PowerPC-based Macs. This gives printer
OEMs the ability to rapidly enter the emerging Intel-based Mac market.
"We understand how difficult it can be
for printer OEMs to
stay on top of OS changes
and updates. That's why we consistently deliver Sorcerer upgrades
in advance of major OS updates and releases," says Jon
Williams, Group Product Manager for Software Imaging. "Our
dedication to updating our products gives customers confidence that
they can quickly react to changes in the market without incurring
high development costs."
Sorcerer is a highly efficient printer driver development system.
Its single-source approach enables fast driver creation for multiple
operating systems without requiring a long and costly development
project. Sorcerer offers several key benefits to OEM customers:
- Greatly reduced time-to-market
- Reduced support and maintenance costs
- Reduced production cost through a simplified driver development
process
- Efficiencies when developing for multiple platforms
"Apple's change in processor strategy caught many in
the printing industry off guard. Thankfully, for users of Sorcerer,
this change does not present a problem," says Tony Harris,
Chief Technology Officer for Software Imaging. "We
remain committed to providing customers with solutions for OS changes
and updates by delivering solutions well in advance. For example,
support for Microsoft's upcoming Windows Vista is already being integrated
into Sorcerer and will become available to our customers for Vista’s
release."
The latest version of Software Imaging's Sorcerer DDK is available
immediately for license to device manufacturers. The core printing
technology can also be integrated by Software Imaging into custom
drivers.
