New Toolkit Automates The Creation of Windows Vista XPSDrv Printer Drivers

Software Imaging's Sorcerer 3 driver development kit allows OEMs to immediately create Windows Vista XPSDrv printer drivers for Microsoft’s new “premium print path”

Oxford, United Kingdom – May 14, 2007 – Software Imaging announced today that the new release of its Sorcerer driver development kit (DDK) makes the creation of premium signable XPSDrv drivers for inkjet and raster-laser devices simple, fast, and cost-effective.

This new release extends the broad-base of operating systems and platforms supported by Sorcerer to include the new print system built into Microsoft’s Windows Vista, allowing OEMs to simply rebuild their existing driver source with Sorcerer for instant Microsoft Vista XPSDrv support.

Printers available today that claim to support Windows Vista use drivers that are based on old Windows 2000/XP driver technology and cannot take advantage of the new and improved user experience, color fidelity and print performance that Windows Vista offers. These legacy Windows 2000-style drivers must rely on Microsoft’s “XPS to GDI converter” when printing XPS documents, which is a “complex to simple” conversion. This conversion can result in the driver discarding much of the “rich” data contained within the XPS document, often introducing significant performance issues and fundamental fidelity and accuracy losses.

New XPSDrv drivers created by Sorcerer 3 do not have to use Microsoft’s XPS to GDI converter when printing XPS documents, so there is no performance or fidelity loss when printing. Windows Vista XPSDrv drivers built using the Sorcerer 3 DDK provide full support for the new XPS document format (which is soon to be an open standard) and provide end-users with all of the benefits of Windows Vista, as well as the superior fidelity offered by XPS – fidelity that can’t be achieved by older Windows 2000-based drivers.

"Because of the significant improvements Microsoft has made in Windows Vista, legacy printer drivers simply cannot take full advantage of what Vista and XPS have to offer," says Jon Williams, Group Product Manager for Software Imaging. "With Sorcerer 3 OEMs can easily create drivers that support these new capabilities, bringing significant benefits to their users while winning market share from their competitors."

Windows Vista and XPS capabilities supported by Sorcerer 3 include:

  • Support for Windows Vista’s wide gamut color space (scRGB)
  • Support for HD Photo
  • Greater color accuracy (16-bit/channel color)
  • Greater accuracy in all blending and halftoning
  • Greater flexibility through the use of the XPS filter pipeline
  • Ability for end-to-end color accuracy (Camera RAW to print)
  • Performance that leverages today’s multicore processors
  • No loss of fidelity when printing from older Win32/Win64-based applications

Sorcerer 3 Vista XPSDrv drivers benefit from the use of the world’s best XPS RIP, Software Imaging’s PrintMagicXPS, combined with ColorCore 3 halftoning and color management technology. Together these allow OEMs to take full advantage of the greater color accuracy and wider color gamut offered by Windows Vista and XPS, no matter how many inks or toners are provided in the print device.

The Sorcerer 3 DDK is available immediately for license to device manufacturers, while customers who develop their own RIP or driver technologies can license PrintMagicXPS and ColorCore 3 separately. Software Imaging also offers custom driver development services.

About the Sorcerer 3 Driver Development Kit

The Sorcerer 3 DDK is a highly efficient printer driver development system designed to support inkjet, raster-laser printers and dyesub devices. Its single-source approach enables fast driver creation for multiple operating systems without requiring a long and costly development project. Sorcerer offers several key benefits to OEM customers:

  • Greatly reduced time-to-market
  • Reduced support and maintenance costs
  • Reduced production cost through a simplified driver development process
  • Efficiencies when developing for multiple platforms

A Sorcerer driver is built from a single driver description, which can be used by the printer OEM to automatically build separate drivers for their required target environments. Using Sorcerer, OEMs can quickly and easily build inkjet and raster-laser drivers for:

  • Windows Vista 64-bit XPSDrv
  • Windows Vista 32-bit XPSDrv
  • Windows XP x64 edition (and Vista 64-bit legacy)
  • Windows XP and 2000 (and Vista 32-bit legacy)
  • Windows NT4
  • Windows Me/9x
  • Mac OS X Universal binary (Intel and PowerPC)
  • Intel/AMD-based Linux

The Sorcerer 3 DDK contains driver source code and drivers for several devices, making it easy for printer OEMs to evaluate the technology and create drivers supporting their own print devices. Sorcerer sample drivers support many common devices, such as the HP 2600 desktop color laser printer and Epson’s R800/PX-G920 photo inkjet printers.
